Tuesday-May 26, 2020

We often see people fighting for their rights. Why do they have to do this even though we are a part of a democratic society? Is democracy the best way to run a country? What are the limitations and the challenges faced in the democracy? Let’s find out more about Challenges to Democracy.

You should know so far that the word ”democracy” comes from the Greek word demos, which means “common people” and Kratos, which means strength. The term “democracy” first appeared in ancient Greek political and philosophical thought in the city-state of Athens during the classical antiquity. It was found in  508–507 BC by the Athenians and it was led by Cleisthenes. Cleisthenes is also known as the ”the father of Athenian democracy”.

Democracy is a system of government in which the citizens exercise power directly or elect representatives from among themselves to form a governing body. It is also known as ”rule of the majority”. The power can’t be inherited in democracy. People elect their leaders. Representatives stand in an election and the citizens vote for their representative. The representative with the most number of votes gets the power.

Some of the challenges of democracy are as follows:

  • Corruption and Inefficiency
  • Role of Anti-Social Elements
  • Growing Economic and Social Inequalities Among People
  • Casteism and Communalism

-Upload a picture of your notes to ClassDojo. We will continue working with the topic for the next class.

Thursday-May 28, 2020

  • Read and copy in your notebook the information below:

"The Challenges to Democracy"

Corruption and Inefficiency

In many democratic countries, the political leaders, officers, tend to be corrupt, dishonest and inefficient. They ask for the bribe. This results in lack of trust of the citizens. This affects the working of democracy in the country very badly.

Role of Anti-Social Elements

The role of anti-social elements arises during the elections. A lot of people are forced or bribed to vote for a particular candidate or party. Rigging also takes place during elections.

Growing Economic and Social Inequalities Among People

There is a lot of socioeconomic inequalities amongst the people. Although all the citizens have the right to vote and fight elections only rich people have a chance to win the election.

  • Make a drawing to represent each one of the challenges listed above and color it. Copy in your notebook this question and answer it in five lines: What is the biggest challenge facing democracy in your country - especially, related to public participation and public trust?
  • Upload your work to ClassDojo.

CIVICS AND ETHICS

Tuesday: April 21 of 2020

  • Copy this title in your notebook and add the current date: "THE PRINCIPLES OF DEMOCRACY".
  • Copy the following information in your notebook:

In  modern  democratic  societies  like  México,  political  rights  give  citizens the  opportunity to participate in decision-making, monitoring the actions of  government  and  to  curb  abuses  of  power.  The  State  is  obliged  to  guarantee  political  rights,  as  part  of  human  rights.  Mexico  has  a  secular civil State, which means that the Mexican government is autonomous and independent from interference by religious institutions. The main tool we have in Mexico to ensure democracy is  the Constitution of  the  United  Mexican  States.  In  this  document  the  principles,  values  and fundamental  rights  of  the  Mexican  population  are  established.  Of  our Constitution  emanate  laws,  rules  and  regulations  governing  the  various areas  of  national  life.  To  do  this,  there  are  various  government  agencies and  civil  society  organizations,  whose  role  is  precisely  to  ensure  compliance with the law. In our contry, democracy has certain principles, among which may be mentioned: popular sovereignty, political equality, the majority and the protection of minorities, and the legal equality.

  • Search on Internet the meaning of "democracy" and mention the name of the first democratic civilization that existed in History.
  • Take a photo of your work (notes and meaning) and upload it to ClassDojo.

  • Political equality: Citizens can be part of the political life of a country.
  • The majority and the protection of minorities: In a democracy everyone should be included.
  • The legal equality: All members of society are equal in the face of law.

In a democratic regime the dignity and human rights are favored and within them are political rights, which are essential to ensure the existence of democracy. In a democratic regime dignity is the basis of human rights and political rights are considered human rights.

  • Copy the quesions in your notebook and answer them:
    • For you, what is social participation?
    • In your opinion, what is a conflict and what can cause it?
  • Read and copy in your notebook the text below:

In everyday life there are situations where a decision affects several people. In this case, people who have different preferences or interests may have disagreements and                      conflicts. Therefore, given the differences is important to consider the needs and opinions of others, because coexistence with diversity and culture is strengthened. Do not forget          that mutual respect can reconcile any differences. To resolve a conflict we require respect, cooperation, dialogue and commitment to establish and enforce agreements.

To avoid social conflicts, the role of governments is to organize the daily activities of the community and provide the necessary services so that these are carried out. For                        example, providing security and surveillance or establish health programs. In fulfilling these actions, the government  improves the living standards of people. In relation to this,              taking civil protection measures and be aware to the media about the government's actions are forms of social participation.

Social participation and collective welfare are always related. collective welfare is a matter of concern for the government, but also for the governed. It is therefore necessary to              play a responsible effort by both parties to identify the needs of the community and create programs to address them. In a representative like democracy like México there are                several ways in which citizens can communicate with authorities: referendum, plebiscite, and popular or citizens' initiative.
